2017 SUMMER READING (5/15 - 8/25) RESOURCES ARE HERE!

Here's  the information you are seeking for our students regarding Summer Reading 2017:

The kick off for Summer Reading is May 15.
All student and staff logs are due to Ms. Allegood by 8/25/17.  Staff includes administration, faculty and any staff in the school community.  Please participate!  All are welcome!  Let's read WITH our students!
Here's the overview and the attachments shared with us by CCSD:

Basically, CCSD works in partnership with the Charleston County Public Library to encourage students to read over the summer.  CCSD has every school distribute logs to track the number of pages students read over the summer.  The students can use the same books to count for the public library's program.  The public library counts minutes instead of pages, but 1 page = 1 minute of reading, so it's pretty easy.   This way, students can get the benefit of the programming and incentives the public library offers and still have the connection and encouragement to read from their schools.

CCSD emphasizes choice and recreational reading to help students avoid losing skills over the summer.  Schools can provide reading lists or recommendations, but there needs to be room for choice for students.  Many schools use the South Carolina Book Award nominees and the public library generally has multiple copies of the titles available.  Remind students that they still have access to MyON and Mackinvia over the summer.

Frequently asked questions:   Although Ms. Allegood will put a suggested reading list link here  on the website by May 15, students may read anything.  Students should turn in separate logs to CCPL and to Ms. Allegood for  because Ms. Allegood will not get a copy of what they turn in for CCPL.  The same log can be used for both, but turn in one copy to CCPL and one copy to Ms. Allegood.  Students will be rewarded with incentives for each.  CCPL's incentives are outlined in their attached information.  When our school turns their logs into Ms. Allegood, they are  counted  for our school, and counted and submitted  to CCSD as well for their prizes and recognition countywide.  CCSD always gives awards for top readers in the district.  Ms. Allegood will be giving certificates and goodies to all participants, and  will be awarding a $25.00 Barnes and Noble gift card to our second place winner, and a $50.00 Barnes and Noble gift card to our first place winner (the student who reads the most) at BHMHS.  The same incentives will be given here for BHMHS faculty and staff.

Please note that on the suggested reading list the picture book and children's books categories are for everybody or all ages (please read to your babies and younger brothers and sisters)!  The Junior Book Award category is recommended for Middle School.  The Young Adult Book Award category is recommended for High School.  Parents, we hope you will read with your children and be their best guides.

Please let me know if you have questions or need assistance.
