The South Carolina Curriculum Standards for Reading/English language arts for grades 9-12 are organized under five areas of study - reading/literature, listening, speaking, writing, and research.  The specific knowledge and skills in these areas are integrated and applied through the four language arts strands: using language to learn, using the conventions and forms of language, using language to communicate, and appreciating language.
